Image compressor

Brushless compresses JPG, PNG and WebP files in your browser, so you can make a photo smaller for a website, an email or an upload form without sending it anywhere. Drag the slider and compare the two halves until you stop seeing a difference, or pick a size a form will accept, then take the whole batch as a ZIP.

Where the detail goes

Compression reduces image size by describing small squares of the picture more roughly. A sunset sky behind bare branches is where it shows first: smooth color breaks into squares, and thin dark lines gather a halo.

Bare branches against an orange sunset sky, enlarged and split down the middle: the left half as saved, the right half at Balanced, with faint squares in the sky and slightly softer twigs.
As saved against Balanced, quality 80189 KB against 104 KB. Enlarged like this, faint squares show in the smooth sky and the twigs soften a little.
The same branches, split: the left half as saved, the right half at quality 40, where the sky has broken into plain squares and blotches and every twig has a halo.
As saved against Too far, quality 40189 KB against 50.2 KB. The sky breaks into plain squares and blotches, and every twig carries a halo.

Smaller, quality 60, sits between them at 67.7 KB: the squares a little stronger than Balanced's, the twigs a little softer. Balanced and Smaller are the settings people use; Too far is the slider's warning mark.

The same 108 × 72 pixel patch of “Bare tree during sunset” by Johannes Plenio (CC0), 1200 × 800 and 189 KB as saved, enlarged three times, or four on a wide screen. In each image the left half is the photo as saved and the right half the compressed file.

Three reasons people compress

Photos for a website

Start on Balanced and check the compare view. Zoomed in to 100%, Balanced scored as invisible on nine of the eighteen images we measured and Barely touched on fifteen, so where detail matters, use Barely touched.

A form that refuses your file

Switch to Fit a size and pick the limit the form states, such as 200 KB or 1 MB. Each photo is saved just under it, and made smaller in pixels only if it has to be.

A batch too big to send

Drop every photo in at once and take the ZIP. The strip adds up the total, which is what an email or chat attachment limit counts.

Questions people ask

Short answers about the Brushless image compressor.

Yes for a PNG: the Brushless image compressor saves it again pixel for pixel, so nothing is lost. A JPG or WebP only gets smaller by dropping some detail, so there the honest goal is no loss you can see: leave the slider on Balanced, then look at the two halves side by side in the compare view, at up to 300%. If you can see a difference, move the slider toward more detail, as far as Barely touched.
