How to convert an AVIF

Questions about converting AVIF
Only if your browser can encode it, and today most cannot. Browsers decode AVIF universally but none of the major ones can yet write it from a canvas, so the AVIF output option is switched off automatically when the capability check fails. We would rather grey the option out than hand you a PNG with an .avif name on it.
AVIF wraps still images in the AV1 video codec, which uses far more sophisticated prediction and transforms than JPG's decades-old design. For the same visual quality it commonly lands 30-50% below JPG, and it also supports transparency and high dynamic range, neither of which JPG can do.
A little, unavoidably. You are decoding one lossy format and re-encoding into another, so a second round of compression is applied. It is rarely visible at high quality settings, but if the image matters, convert to PNG instead and accept the larger file.
