PEF to JPG converter
A free PEF to JPG converter that also writes PNG and WebP, entirely in your browser. PEF is Pentax’s raw format, and outside Pentax’s own software very little will open one. This pulls out the full-size JPEG the camera embedded and converts that, with the PEF never leaving your machine.

How to convert a PEF
- Add your PEF filesDrag in the files from your Pentax card, or browse for them. All of the reading happens on your machine.
- Keep JPG, or pick PNG or WebPJPG is preselected for a Pentax shot you want to share. PNG keeps the extracted image lossless; WebP makes it smallest.
- Convert and downloadThe reader follows each PEF's directories through the first megabyte of the file, reads the whole file once if one points further in, and re-encodes the full-size JPEG it finds. One PEF downloads on its own; several come back as a ZIP.
Questions about converting PEF
No: this takes the JPEG your Pentax already rendered when you pressed the shutter and converts it, so nothing in the raw data is re-developed. White balance, highlight recovery and your own tone curve need desktop software: Pentax’s own, Lightroom, or the free darktable.
Not quite, and the number is worth saying out loud: of five real PEF files measured, four converted. The fifth is an older file whose internal directory chain this reader cannot follow, and it fails with a message saying so rather than producing something wrong. Anything under 1024 pixels on its long side, or under 40 percent of the raw image’s own long side, is failed the same way instead of being upscaled.
Not for this tool. Pentax bodies will write DNG in place of PEF, and DNG is not on the accepted list here: the DNG files measured in this pass carried no decodable full-size preview at all, only a thumbnail, so there was nothing honest to extract. Shoot PEF, or export a JPEG from your raw software.
