How to convert a CR2

Questions about converting CR2
No, and it does not claim to. Canon writes a full-size JPEG into every CR2 alongside the sensor data; this tool extracts that JPEG and converts it to the format you pick. That is why it is instant and why nothing needs uploading. If you want to actually develop the raw file — your own white balance, highlight recovery, lens corrections — use Canon's Digital Photo Professional, Lightroom, or darktable.
Not here yet. Canon switched to CR3 with the EOS R and M50 in 2018, and CR3 is a completely different container — it is built on the same box structure as MP4 rather than the TIFF layout CR2 uses, so the extractor that reads a CR2 cannot read it. Rather than give you a CR3 page that fails the moment you drop a file on it, we have left it out until it genuinely works.
Yes — that is precisely what it is. The embedded preview is Canon's own rendering of the shot, using whatever Picture Style was active when you took it. So a shot taken in Monochrome comes out monochrome, and one shot with a heavy contrast profile keeps that profile. This is the camera's interpretation, not a neutral one.
